Warming up the conversion engine…

Convert another file

100% private — your file is processed on your device and never uploaded to any server.

Works well with files up to ~50 MB or 300 pages (depending on your device's memory).

How it works

Three steps, all on your own computer or phone.

1

Choose your PDF

Drag the file in or pick it. It is not sent anywhere.

2

It runs in your browser

pdf.js loads once per session and extracts the text locally.

3

Download your ODT

You get a real .odt, ready to open in LibreOffice Writer or OpenOffice.

PDF to ODT: the open alternative to Word

ODT (OpenDocument Text) is the open text standard used by LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer. If you work with free software day to day, converting your PDF straight to ODT saves you the detour through Word.

Like every other conversion on this site, everything happens inside your browser: the PDF is read locally with the same technology (pdf.js) Firefox uses to display PDFs, and the .odt file is generated on your device too, without passing through any server.

The result rebuilds the paragraphs and page breaks of the original PDF. It is faithful for flowing-text documents (letters, reports, articles); for complex layouts with columns or elaborate tables it is a reasonable approximation of the content, not an exact replica of the original design.

Prefer to stay in the Microsoft ecosystem? Use PDF to Word (.docx) instead; both tools share the same PDF reading engine.
