Convert another file

100% private — your file is processed on your device and never uploaded to any server.

Works well with files up to ~50 MB or 300 pages (depending on your device's memory).

How it works

Three steps, all on your own computer or phone.

1

Choose your PDF

Drag the file in or pick it. It is not sent anywhere.

2

It runs in your browser

pdf.js reads the document locally and pulls out the text.

3

Download the text

You get a plain .txt file you can open anywhere.

When plain text is exactly what you need

Sometimes you don't want formatting at all — you want the words. Feeding a document into a script, counting words, searching across many files, pasting a passage into an email or moving content into a system that only accepts plain text: in all of these, a .txt file is easier to work with than a .docx.

This tool extracts the text layer of the PDF and hands it to you as a plain file, without uploading anything. The extraction happens on your device with pdf.js, the same engine Firefox uses to render PDFs.

Keep in mind that plain text carries no bold, italics, headings, tables or images: it is the content stripped of its design. If you need to keep the formatting, convert to Word or ODT instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does the .txt file contain?

The text of the PDF, page by page, with no formatting: no bold, no italics, no tables and no images.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is extracted inside your browser and the file never leaves your device.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Only if the PDF has a real text layer. A photo or a scan without OCR has nothing to extract.

What encoding does it use?

The file is saved as UTF-8, so accented characters and other non-English letters survive correctly.
